Is Loveless Vancouver a True Phenomenon?

Time and time again single Vancouverites are asking themselves the same question: why is it so difficult for singles to connect in Vancouver? Numerous Vancouver-based newspapers and bloggers have commented on this phenomenon and here’s what they’re saying:

  • TheThirtiesGrind Blog: “People stay very isolated to their own little groups, making it difficult for newcomers to find a place to fit in.”
  • The Vancouver Sun Newspaper: “There is a lack of sexuality in Vancouver… No one smiles at you on the street here! People are cold.”
  • Ren Thomas Blog: “It’s also notoriously difficult for young singles to meet potential mates in this town… When I moved here for grad school, those of us from out of town quickly realized that the “townies” didn’t really socialize with us.”
  • Georgia Straight Newspaper: “Vancouverites are really, really good at looking hot. But the city has a hellish reputation among hetero singles for being socially cold, cliquey, and smug.”

Ren Thomas even goes on to list numerous reasons for Vancouver’s stand-offish attitude from strict prohibition-era liquor laws to the weather and urban planning. Meanwhile, a study from The Georgia Straight finds “isolation and disconnection” as a top issue according to local charitable foundations and community leaders. While some blame the women as being too stuck up and snobby, others see Vancouverite men as insecure and lacking courage. Van Mag’s article “Do Vancouver Men Suck?” goes on to fault Vancouver’s mismatched couples on successful women trying to date small ego-ed men.
