Divorce Selfies are a Growing Trend

A Canadian duo have commemorated the end of their marriage in a very unique way – by snapping a selfie.

Shannon and Chris Neuman sent social media into a frenzy when they posted a picture of them together outside a Calgary courthouse, just minutes after filing for divorce.

Ms Neuman posted the smiley photograph of the pair to her Facebook page and the image, which has since been made private, later received over 30,000 shares.

‘Here’s Chris Neuman and I yesterday after filing for divorce! But we’re smiling?!’ Ms Neuman wrote.

‘Yep, we’re kooky like that…We’re smiling because we have done something extraordinary (we think anyway!).’

Ms Neuman explained how the pair ‘respectfully, thoughtfully and honourably’ ended their marriage which will allow them to co-parent moving forward removing the need for their children to have to choose between them.

‘They’ll never have to wonder which side of the auditorium to run to after their Christmas concert or spring play, because we’ll be sitting together,’ Ms Neuman wrote.

'Drama': While Ms Neuman mentioned the struggle of divorce, the images are not to celebrate the end of the marriage but to celebrate making it through the proceedings and the enjoyable years they had together

‘They won’t have to struggle with their own wedding planning because we’ll be sitting on the same side of the aisle – THEIR side,’ she added.

Ms Neuman did allude to the painful side of divorce by mentioning that the pair had ‘struggled’ but explained how they have since come out the other side.

‘Please consider our way if you find yourself on this road, or share our message if we can help remind them that it’s possible to love your kids more than you hate/distrust/dislike your ex (which we have felt as time on the journey),’ Ms Neuman wrote, before adding #teamneuman and #divorceselfie.

Divorce selfies have been growing in popularity over the past year, with hundreds of couples taking to social media and sharing snaps of their last matrimony moments.

Some have live tweeted the proceedings and all have shared the same attitude – that although it may not have been forever, it was still a beautiful journey.

The selfies follow the trend of divorce ceremonies, where Australian couples chose to hire a celebrant to guide them through the end of their marriage.

The response to the photo has been overwhelmingly positive, with many taking to social media and sharing their support.

‘I think this is great. I don’t believe that they are “encouraging or promoting divorce”, but more so the healthy concept of being CIVIL HUMAN BEINGS after something like this,’ one user said.

‘I am happy though that these two people can show the world that there can be two consenting and civil human beings about ending a marriage and getting divorced
